Iran: Strait of Hormuz - ceasefire tensions

Iran: Strait of Hormuz - ceasefire tensions

The Strait of Hormuz sits once again at the centre of global tension, as the US military says a blockade of Iranian ports has been “fully implemented,” bringing sea-based trade into and out of Iran to a near standstill.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) claims the operation is being enforced against vessels of all nations entering or leaving Iranian coastal waters, involving more than 10,000 military personnel supported by warships and aircraft. Officials say the objective is to halt Iran-linked maritime trade, with early reports indicating multiple merchant vessels were ordered to turn back or re-enter Iranian ports.

According to CENTCOM, no ships have successfully passed through the blockade since its implementation. In the first 24 hours alone, several vessels were reportedly intercepted or redirected, highlighting the speed and scale of enforcement now underway in and around the region.

The economic implications are immediate. CENTCOM estimates that around 90% of Iran’s economy relies on maritime trade, meaning restrictions at sea have rapidly translated into severe economic disruption. Oil markets reacted sharply, with prices briefly surging above $100 per barrel amid fears of wider instability.

However, the situation is not only military and economic - it is also deeply political. Iranian officials have described the blockade as a violation of an existing ceasefire agreement. One Tehran-based analyst warned that the development “can complicate the situation,” noting that the ceasefire remains “very fragile,” with uncertainty over how Iran will respond next.

This fragile balance is unfolding in one of the world’s most strategic waterways, where even limited disruption can ripple across global energy supply chains. While some commercial movement is still observed in the wider region, officials say enforcement extends beyond geography, with suspected vessels monitored and intercepted far from the Strait itself.

As military pressure increases and diplomatic signals remain unclear, the region finds itself suspended between containment and escalation, waiting for the next move in an increasingly unstable standoff.

1. Pray for Wisdom in a Fragile Ceasefire

Father, we pray for restraint in moments where tension is rising. Where agreements are fragile and suspicion is strong, bring wisdom that chooses peace over escalation and protects nations from decisions that cannot be undone once made.

“But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.” James 3:17

2. Pray for Protection for Those at Sea

Father, watch over sailors and civilians in uncertain waters. Grant safety, discernment, and protection beyond human sight. Guide every vessel safely through danger, delay, and unseen threats at sea.

“The Lord will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”  Psalm 121:8

3. Pray for Peace Over Global Decision-Making

God of all nations, we ask You to intervene where political pressure and military power collide. Turn hearts away from retaliation and toward justice and mercy. Raise leaders who value life, stability and who seek peace.

“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”  Micah 6:8

Summary Prayer

Lord, in a world of rising tension and fragile agreements, we ask for mercy over the nations. Calm troubled waters, guide leaders with wisdom, protect those at sea, and restrain escalation. Let peace hold where pressure threatens to break through. Amen
