Global shipping through the Red Sea and Suez Canal faces a renewed and more complex threat, as the corridor linking Asia, the Middle East, and Europe enters what analysts describe as its most unpredictable period yet. The commercial consequences remain severe. Daily vessel transits through the southern Red Sea have fallen from a pre-crisis average of 70 ships to just 30–35. Asia-Europe freight rates remain 25–40% above what they would otherwise be, and most carriers continue to route around Africa's Cape of Good Hope, adding up to 14 days and significant cost to every voyage. Industry consensus does not expect a full return to normal until at least 2027.
The broader regional picture deepens concern. Disruption to the Strait of Hormuz — a separate but linked chokepoint — has compounded pressure on energy and supply markets. The Red Sea is no longer simply a logistics challenge; it has become a front line in a wider geopolitical conflict with global consequences.
Analysts warn that the current calm on the water should not be mistaken for resolution. The underlying capacity and motivation for renewed attacks remain fully intact. The question is not whether the Houthis can resume their maritime campaign, but when and under what conditions they will choose to do so.
